The Testudo marginata, also known as the Marginated Tortoise, is native to the Mediterranean region, especially Sardinia, Italy. It is the largest tortoise species in Europe, reaching up to 40 cm in length. It is easily recognized by the dark, elongated shell and its distinctive flared rear edge—also known as the "skirt."
In the wild, this tortoise inhabits dry hillsides and scrubland. In captivity, it's crucial to replicate these conditions to maintain health and well-being. At Mini Zoo Rinaldi Denis, all Testudo marginata tortoises are kept in naturalistic enclosures that simulate their native habitat.
This is a strictly herbivorous species, feeding on wild grasses and leafy greens. In captivity, a proper diet includes dandelions, chicory, and radicchio to ensure balanced nutrition.
Testudo marginata requires a hibernation period during the winter months. The ideal temperature range for hibernation is 4°C to 8°C (39°F to 46°F) to support their natural cycle and overall health.
